Description
A set of wooden steps leads down to a tranquil blue lake surrounded by hills with trees that show early signs of spring foliage. A clear sky with a few clouds overlooks the serene landscape, reflecting off the surface of the lake.
This is Upper Shernado Lake in the George Washington National Forest, Augusta County Virginia. Located in the southern end of the Shenandoah Valley, it's known locally as the jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Upper lake is the smaller of the two lakes at Sherando, and it was built in 1958 by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service for flood control. The lower, large lake, Lake Sherando, and many of the recreational facilities, were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the mid 1930s.
